BrainWorks offers a comprehensive solution for children who require sensory breaks to enhance their functioning in various environments. Occupational therapists and specialists frequently recommend sensory breaks for children experiencing sensory processing disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, ADD, learning disabilities, as well as typically developing children facing specific sensory input challenges. These challenges often lead to difficulties in remaining focused, engaging socially, and managing emotional regulation. Proactively integrating sensory breaks can serve as an effective method to mitigate these issues.
The BrainWorks App distinguishes itself by streamlining the process of selecting appropriate activities tailored to the needs of children requiring sensory support. This application comes equipped with over 200 sensory activities, with continuous updates to its content. Key features of the app include:
- Locations: The app offers default activity lists for five specific environments: Home, School, Community, Desk/Table, and Clinic. Users can customize location names and images or remove locations as necessary.
- Sensory System Descriptions: Upon selecting a location, children can identify their current feelings through visual prompts such as Just Right, Slow & Sluggish, Fast & Stressed, and Fast & Hyper. For those familiar with other BrainWorks resources, a tachometer representation aids in depicting their sensory pace. The activities presented are contingent on the child’s selection, all of which are customizable.
- Activity Lists: Each location features a default visual compilation of potential activities. Caregivers can modify these lists based on equipment availability and appropriateness for the child. The Settings mode provides detailed descriptions of each activity and necessary equipment—many of which require no tools at all.
- Timer: Caregivers have the option to set the duration of each sensory break within a range of 2 to 20 minutes. A visual countdown timer can be activated for the child’s reference but remains optional based on caregiver preference.
- Custom Activities: Caregivers can contribute personalized sensory activities by creating titles, uploading images, and designating their visibility on activity lists.
Please note that initial setup is essential prior to usage; caregivers should allocate approximately 30 minutes to customize the app effectively for optimal benefits for children.
The BrainWorks app has already been successfully implemented by thousands of children across various settings, delivering a much-needed resource that is now accessible anytime and anywhere.
